The Martin Luther King, Jr. Steering Committee and the UMOJA/Unity Committee hosted their fourth annual “Celebration of Cultures” program April 18, showcasing performers from cultures as varied as China, Navajo, Scottish, Southern Appalachian and Liberia.
The show was free and took place at the Johnson City Senior Center, 607 E. Myrtle Ave., The audience was treated to a dinner at 6 p.m. and a series of 10- to 15-minute performances some of which they became willing and unwilling participants. The entertainers performed to a full house.
Event coordinator Wayne Robertson said the event’s purpose is to help people learn more about and better understand different cultures, and to see how some traditions originated that are still practiced by certain ethnic groups.
“Lots of different cultures have their own festival,” he said. “I think this helps people see how some cultural things have morphed into what Americans know today, but they just don’t know what’s behind it.
